5.4 Earthquake Occurred This Morning Off the Oregon Coast A 5.4 earthquake occurred at 8:23 am Friday morning 263 miles west of Newport off the Oregon Coast. According to USGS the quake had a depth of 6 miles. This quake occurred very close to the location as the earthquake swarm that occurred two months ago. At that time this is what geologist Philip Ong had to say about those quakes. "This is an interesting glimpse of normal earth movements... A fault came unstuck and is catching up on the plate movements that surrounded it, but it’s not a traditionally dangerous fault and nothing to worry about. It’s a transform fault so has the wrong geometry for very hazardous tsunami, so no worries there, and generally it’s better that it’s releasing energy in lots of smaller events rather than one large one. We can be thankful about that!" This quake is not expected to generate a tsunami.
