The 4A Bruins (2-0, 2-0) are ranked No. 2 in the 3A/2A/1A state power rankings while 1A UVC (2-1, 1-1) is ranked No. 18. Koby Sewall scored for the Monarchs in the 81st minute. UVC had nine shots on goal along with four saves while the Bruins had 12 shots on goal. Brookings-Harbor went to the quarterfinals in the state playoffs last year. “They’re traditionally a phenomenal first-touch team that moves aggressively on the attack,” UVC coach Christ Guastaferro said. “We fought hard but couldn’t finish the shots the way we wanted. Most of the game was played in middle and defensive third. But we were able to capitalize on a few of their mistakes and drive the ball into their zone.” It was the Monarchs first loss of the season. Five of the first six Special District 4 league games for UVC are at home. After that stretch they play five games in a row on the road. “I think we’re learning a lot about ourselves as a team and how we respond to different kinds of pressure,” Guastaferro said. “As the year progresses, we’ll begin to fit into a groove and play with intentionality. The Monarchs play Gold Beach/Pacific on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Fir Grove Park.
